Marine Ich

Posted: Thursday, January 26, 2012 3:08 PM Quote

Hi I am quite new to the hobby...

My 400ltr aquarium has been setup for approx 3 to 4 months now.. only have 2 polyps, live rock and a sailfin tang, blue hippo tang and 2 clowns plus orange spotted goby..

At first I had some fish dying due to white spot (marine ich) then I lowered salinity to 1.018/9 and temperature rise to 29degrees and things seem to start sorting out... its been over a month now.. all of  a sudden I am noticing white sopts on the blue tang again and the salif - the latter has been in perfect shape for weeks now... still temperature is high and low salinity.. all water parameters ok and I also added an ozoniser with controller a week ago... so this was unexepcted...

what do you guys suggest??

cheers

robert

Hi ROb welcome on board, what is the size of the aquarium please and do you have a recent parameter readings that would help.

Hi, I also have two ocellaris clowns and a red fire goby that have white spots. Till now my yellow tail chromis seems to be free from spots.  One of the clowns is not eating and is always at the bottom of the tank.  Btw my tank is 120ltr.  I also have installed an ozonizer about 4 days ago and have raised the temperature to 29.  My parameters as of yesterday evening are PH 8.2, Ammonia 0, NO2 0, NO3 under 5ppm, salinity 1.023.

The  spots are there for about 5 days now. Any suggestions what to do please,  am I on the right track?

Thanks

are you using a refrectometer or a Hydrometer to measure the salinity ? one of the causes could be high salinity due to inacurate reading causing fish to be stressed if using a hydrometer I would suggest taking a water sample to an LFS.

Also start dosing food in garlic to supplement the immune system of the fish.

Hi admin

I have a V2 refractometer and find it quite accurrate.  My LFS always confirm my reading.  Infact I just confirmed it yesterday as well and tested also if I have copper and resulted 0 as well.

Can you explain about this garlic feeding?  What do you mean, do I have to include a garlic clove juice with the frozen shimp?  Currently I am giving my fish half a cube, what is the dosage or the juice?

Sorry for all these questions.

Thanks a lot once again for your help

Hi to all..

thanks for your welcome and for reply.

so my tank size is 125cm by 65cm by 50cm with two t5 lights

re parameters.. ammonia & NO2 = 0, No3 = 10, ph= :8.1 (varying a bit), calcium a bit on the low side and I am dosing daily ie. approx 360, phosphate ok.. also my LFS confirmed all..

re salinity I use a refractometer and my LFS confirmed reading too.. ie. 1.018/9

re food I give a variety of frozen food (cubes I buy from my LFS) then I have been adding some garlic daily for over a month also do give a mixture of other foods including from Sera, Tetra, got spirulina and Nori too..

but this ich thing is getting me crazy and on the verge of giving up..

my salfin was doing ok for over a month now but today got got white dots, re clowns and goby so far ok, but blue tang is the worst.. also got a keyhole angle not doing that good but she is quite new and refusing all food..honestly i doubt she will survive...

You are getting the ich because you do not quarantine your fish when buying them, due to stress during the journey fish can develop ich and the only way to get rid of the ich is to quarantine and treat in a small tank before putting them in the main aquarium.

At this stage I suggest you setup a hospital tank and put the fish in there and start treating with medication. As you have corals you cannot dose medication in the main aquarium since most medication is copper based.

I would also invest in a small UV sterilizer even though it will only tackle water borne parasites it will kill a percentage of the ich, unfortunately the ich is mainly found on the substrate where the fish rest at night and it's very difficult to treat them in an established tank.

re garlic spinev you can either buy food which already has garlic in it or mesh up a garlic clove and dip the shrimp in it.
