Posted: Saturday, February 11, 2012 5:47 PM Quote

Hi,

Im new to fish and last week i bought couple of guppies and after searching the internet i found out that if hey have a black spot on their anal fin means they are pregnant.

Can you confirm this for me from the picture?

How do you know hoew many days are left before birth? When should i put it in the breeding box?

seems pregnant.. i'd say about 6-7 days.. photo is a bit blurred, you can tell when she's about to give birth when the tummy squares off (looking from the front it will look square shaped) - don't put her in a breeding box too early because she will be stressed and you'll have many dead at birth

I tried to take couple of more photos but its hard to get a good one as they are always on the move.

The males are still running after them, will they stop or they continue even though they are pregnant.

The thing is that i am seeing the black spot on 4 of my guppies :S and i want to know if im imagining or not.

yes , she is pregnant, becouse if she wosn't it will be yelowish transperiant, abd bty if she is pregnant most of the time she will be 2 or 3 times more pregnant even if she wont have a male with her

correct. that guppy is pregnant. still early days however.

some months ago I created a thread about pregnant livebearers (of which the guppy forms part of the family) : http://www.aquariummalta.com/boards/t/5935/how-to-know-if-you-livebearer-is-about-to-drop.aspx

I suggest that you should avoid using breeding boxes. The best way is to buy a small plastic aquarium and a sponge filter. Then cover the bottom with large pebbles (do not use sea pebbles). You can also place the plastic grid of the breeding box and place it at the bottom of the tank over the pebbles to create more hiding space. Then fill with water from the aquarium in which you have the guppy. When the fry are born, they will usually fall at the bottom....usually the fry are born during early morning....once fry are born feed the guppy....always crush the flakes so that the fry will be able to eat some as well. Then remove the guppy and place it back to the original aquarium. The advantages of using a seperate tank is that the guppy wont be stressed in the breeding box, and the fry will have ample space to swim, and will eventually grow faster. Do not feed the fry with large flakes. Good luck, I saw the photo, the guppy will release the fry in a week.

You were right! She was giving birth this morning. I dont know how you managed to see that, cause i did not see any squarish things or so on i saw a fry swimming lol.

But unfortunatly i was not prepared for this, had no breeding box and it was breeding in the aquarium, i should be popping home during my work break so see the results.

I should be a little bit luck as i have lots of live plants in it and hopefully i will be able to save some.

Today im getting a breeding box as of the other 2 guppies, eventually i will upgrade to a second aquarium if things go well :D.

Congratulations !

Hopefully the fry are still alive...but they should be. If they are healthy and you have plants most of them will survive. do u have other types of fish apart from guppies? if you have tetras or swordtails, they will eat the fry. If the fry are swimming freely, look at the other fish....if they are not chasing them, I suggest that you don't put all the fry in the breeding box....fry grow better when they are in a bigger tank. In few weeks time the female will give birth again ! so be prepared :).

Good day
