 Depending on the origin of the fish in your tank they might have very high requirements in the way of clean water because they come from very large bodies of water where pollution is immediately washed away. For those fish, normal filtration methods are not sufficient. Even those microscopic particles that other filters will never deal with, and which will eventually turn into sludge in the bottom of the aquarium, are being removed effectively by a protein skimmer. They are designed to remove proteins including organic dyes, amino acids, fatty acids and metal ions. They also increase the Redox potential of aquariums.
